To display a converted value in Power BI while importing data from SFDC reports

Salesforce is a powerful tool to manage your customers or channels. You can build your own reports and dashboards in SFDC and it is easier to use the alto-converted function to unify the currency while your business across many countries with different currencies. However, in some organizations, you may suffer from license fees so that it is not allowed many people to access SFDC. Other cases are that your stakeholders would like to use dashboard tools such as Power BI or Tableau to deliver business insights.

A converted value in SFDC, which is not able to show in Power BI

For the above purposes, I will introduce how to import data from SFDC to Power BI and how to solve the converted value problem between tow systems.

Import data from SFDC reports

Let us start with Power BI and select data source as SFDC reports( due to computer setting, the screenshot is in Chinese, please simply refer to the icon)

Step 1
Step 2

Here we choose the production environment and put configurations setting to connect to SFDC in this step. Once you complete connecting with SFDC, you can select the report you need and take a review of it.

To show the converted value in Power BI

A converted column in Power BI

Ok, now refer to the first chart of this article and double-check with the above chart, you will find that a converted column called ‘amount’ cannot be shown in BI. But don't worry about it, let’s see how to solve it.

To separate the amount and currency just like to normalize data in DB

Right-click the double-headed arrow icon on the right-hand side of the column name, the column is formed by two kinds of data, currency and amount. What we need to do here is to extract the amount part, and you can choose to keep it in char-type or to change it into number-type, all up to you.

Done, here we have the original number which has already been converted into USD(through the setting in SFDC). The same function could be used in any compound columns following the principle of data normalization. In my Medium, I will disclose more skills with regard to SFDC and Power BI, stay tuned.
